Suffer the Day – A Poem

Suffer the Day –  For Shkoder

The Mosque calls,

The Church Bells ring,

The day has begun,

I suffer the day today,

Café at 11, oh, suffer the day.

No work again today,

I look and look, but nowhere can I find,

I suffer the day,

Cast about to and fro’,

No hope! No dreams! No desire!

Can I, suffer the day, today?

Change, where is the change?

No job, no money, no future,

But I suffer the day today,

Look again the morrow comes,

The weather is nice, no rain has come,

Maybe, I suffer another day, just one more,

Did I murmur hope a dream?

Did I feel a bit of desire?

Can I suffer the day?

Will I suffer the day?

Will I break the day and suffer no more?

Lest I be too weak, too broken,

Save to suffer each day,

Say nay, look about and say;

Suffer the day no more,

The children are reading and dreaming!

More hope, more desire,

The old have suffered the day too long,

Dwell here we must not,

We must not suffer this day, today!

The Church Bells ring,

The Mosque calls,

This day is done and suffering no more,

The morrow’ is for the children,

Will the dream be made to suffer the day,

Is the child’s hope and desire enough to suffer the day no more.

The Mosque calls,

The Church bells ring,

The day has begun,

I suffer the day today.
